Layers of Style For Fall

Perpetual cool kids Fernando Garcia and Laura Kim, the design duo behind “downtown” brand Monse, have taken Fall and turned it on its head. Plaids and tweeds and knits, oh my! Influenced by the purest of sources, Wes Anderson’s animated film Fantastic Mr. Fox, in which said character appears in tailored brown suits and striped pajamas, updated for the runway, of course, with the help of multi-colored tartan in the form of patchwork dresses, off the shoulder knits and an outstanding 90’s inspired slip dress.

Speaking of the ’90s, the decade of the moment continued its revival through Monse with a decidedly modern punk esthetic. Clunky boots, fishnet stockings, chokers, and ruched velvet all appeared in the first half of the show, while the second half segued into more tailored looks. The “Monse Treatment” was widespread; jackets and skirts sliced and diced and reassembled with mismatched materials, asymmetrical hemlines, dangling belt ties, and skirts that look like shirts, all signature Monse styles that have appeared in their collections throughout the years. The unisex collection (boys in dresses! Girls in suits!) showed some desirable knitwear including a men’s black sweater with a trio of fastened belts across the chest; a baggy striped off the shoulder knit paired with a plaid skirt and a head to toe chunky sweater combo with a cowl neck top, belted with black leather, and a floor-length skirt slit up the thigh. Warm enough for winter, cool enough for Monse.
