Marchesa Bets that Eveningwear Will Make a Comeback in 2021

In a year that saw red carpets canceled, weddings postponed and international galas a distant memory, it is hard for an eveningwear brand such as Marchesa to still have a stake in the fashion game when leisurewear and business casual have been the extent of dressing up for months on end. Yet for a company that could withstand the fallout of investor Harvey Weinstein, Marchesa has proven itself to be a fighting presence, wrapped in silk and chiffon.

For their Spring 2021 collection, Marchesa smartly steered away from the grandiose ballgowns of their past esthetic, opting instead for elegant glamour with flowing floral dresses with cinched waists and flouncing ruffles. A stunning white chiffon column dress was adorned with 3D tropical flowers, sequined green palm leaves, and floating blue feathers extending off the dress that was truly a work of wearable art. The strongest pieces, however, proved to be the most simple and understated. A navy blue floor-length dress with a slit up the middle and delicate skin-baring slashes atop each hip was subtly enhanced by sparkling crystals, evoking the starry night sky, and proved to be a palate cleanser amidst all the bold prints, lace, and appliqués. An elegant grey silk dress framed the body, and was topped with a crystal neckpiece holding the halter together; and finally, a white and navy color-blocked dress was draped to perfection with a modern take on a bow at the waistline.

Marchesa is a brand known for their beauty and excess, for creating whimsical, once in a lifetime designs for special occasions. Yet when the world comes to stand still, they might soon discover that understated elegance will be the way of the future. At least for a little while.
