WANDERLUST AND WHEAT FIELDS

Jacquemus Delivers Us the Summer Vacation We Desperately Needed

“L’Amour” is the name Simon Porte Jacquemus dubbed his eponymous Spring/Summer 2021 collection, and aptly so, as love was evident in every aspect of the show. Let’s take first the fact that Jacquemus was the first designer to show live in France after quarantine, an essential aspect to his craft and vision, as was stated in WWD: “It’s not negotiable, It’s at the heart of the strategy for a house like mine.…It’s a special moment, an emotion you transmit.” Anyone who recalls last season’s lavender fields collection, or follows the designer’s wanderlust-inducing Instagram page, understands exactly what location means for a brand such as Jacquemus.

Which brings us to the next labor of “L’Amour”: destination. 100 carefully selected attendees were transported to a winding, wooden runway cutting its way through a field of gently wafting golden wheat in the French Vexin Regional National Park an hour outside of Paris. Guests were socially distanced from each other, with chair alcoves cut into the wheat alongside the runway. The collection was indeed an extension of the location; light, breezy, and effortless, with a muted, neutral color palette of white, tan, grey, and blue; a perfect complement to the pale skies dotted with fluffy clouds and the serene earthiness of the wheat.

Menswear consisted of easy button-up separates and slouchy suits. Shirts were half-tucked and half-buttoned, paired with knee-length shorts and cargo pants. Jacquemus had some fun with his menswear embellishments this season, showing a pale yellow suit adorned with fork and knife appliqués, as well as a baggy grey suit dotted with heart cut-outs worn shirtless and paired with open-toe sandals.

If you spent most of the quarantine staring at images of far off lands and dreaming of postponed vacations, Jacquemus’ Spring collection only furthered those wanderlust desires. It was a perfect wardrobe to take you from spring quarantine, lounging around the house, to summer vacation as the world starts to emerge from its break, and finally spill into fall evenings in the countryside. A tale masterfully crafted by Jacquemus, whose storytelling only gets better with each season.
